Why we are in this mess, the politics of wanting to be liked.

Reading a Wall Street Journal article concerning Supreme Court nominee Sonia Sotomayor, I was struck by one particular line.

Others said that if the Senate GOP were to split roughly in half, that would signal support to conservatives who oppose Judge Sotomayor without angering Hispanic voters with a wholesale dismissal of her nomination.

So, in other words, people are voting, not on their conscience or their principles, but by who might or might not be happy with them. This is how we got into this mess we are in, in the first place. People run for office on a platform that they are supposed to believe in or one that mirrors their principles. The people vote on them based on whether or not these principles line up with their own. Now all of a sudden, the GOP is deciding to vote, not on their bedrock beliefs, but on what special interest/ethnic groups might think of them. This is play politics with this nation’s future, and that is about as disgusting as it can get. The GOP is now wetting its finger and sticking it up in the air and seeing which way the black or hispanic vote is blowing that day. I’m fairly sure our founding fathers are turning over in their graves and wondering why they bothered in the first place.

I am about at that point where I am through with the GOP. I have been a Republican since before I could vote. I railed against Jimmy Carter in 1978, I was 9. I rooted for Reagan’s election in 1980, I was 11. And I worked on Reagan’s reelection campaign in 1984, if you’re good at math you’ll already have realized that I was 15 (I was born in 1969). But after Reagan, the GOP started moving away from my principles. They succumb to the blue blood liberals of the party and started a leftward drift. They decided to out democrat the democrats and begin a spending binge that has led us to the swamp we are lost in now.

What can be done? Simple. Stop enabling the GOP to do what it is doing. Give them no money. Don’t vote for a candidate if they don’t stand by the bedrock principles of limited (very small) government. If a candidate seems to worry about what the mainstream media thinks or seems to not want to piss off a special interest group, then run away, fast. The ultimate thing to do is support candidates that hold principles and show conviction in what you believe, whether or not that candidate is a Republican.

It has been hinted at that Sarah Palin is gearing up to start a third party, a Conservative party. There are numerous articles and blogs concerning Sarah Palin and her future, along with the future of Conservatives. Below are some good ones with some select quotes pulled out.

Sarah Palin’s Declaration of Independence

Mrs. Palin, you are now free of the Republican Party. The Party needs you more than you need it. To say that the Republican Party, on its own, has a charismatic void is a vast understatement. You are now free to wage all out war on the status quo. More importantly you are free to fashion a Reagan-esque Conservative alliance on your terms.

At the risk of being presumptuous, I would suggest the following lines of attack for your war against the Democrats and the Obama/ Pelosi / Frank/ Dodd Economy. Free market capitalism must be emphasized as our only true hope for recovery — not the crony capitalism of the Democrats.

SarahPAC raises $733,000 in first six months of 2009; Update: Rush wonders about third-party run

The majority of the money raised by SarahPAC so far has come in the form of “unitemized contributions,” meaning donations of less than $200 each. PACS are not required to name those small donors in their filings with the FEC. The remaining money came through more than 700 different $200-plus contributions made by donors from all around the United States.

Warning Signs For The Republican Party: A Third Way?

Still, it’s worth repeating. What should be heard loud and clear by the Republican elite is that, you now have a significant portion of your traditional voting base that has just about had enough and political leaders within your own party now giving voice to that serious frustration. Combined with the Tea Party movement, while it wouldn’t be easy, this all makes a third political way in America far more possible than it has been for decades.

It might be wise for the GOP to pay attention to their base and not every special interest group that comes down the pipe. Put the blue bloods back in their place, the democrat party, and go with the majority of Americans…go Conservative.
